Also there really should be a "status.nationstates.net" type site that displays the NS status, and is hosted separately. It seems really strange that you found out the site was down because you tried to log in. I get emails when my sites go down. I thought about emailing max, but I figured that you guys had some kind of similiar setup. Learning that you in fact do not is highly troubling.

Speaking of that, I used this site to see whether or not it was just me that couldn't get on NS at the time, since it checks whether or not the site responds via pinging it. I also checked NS using Kproxy, which I could use to access the site, though not to logon, with the invalid password issues. And since the forums were completely empty of active users, that kinda contributed to my conclusion at the time.

Anyway..

NS has been brought down by a rogue moose in the past. Panic, chaos, and disorder ensued. If memory serves, that one had the site down the better part of a full day.

Ya know, why am I not surprised by that. Did you check to make sure it didn't have anything to do with a data overflow? The information this holds IS being increased daily, and as far as I can tell, RP's that lasted two minutes from two years ago are still here, so lots and lots of unnecessary data that can cause problems.

The game server has gone down twice in the past week for significant periods of time due to a bug in the sessions manager. There is a race condition that means it's possible for the sessions manager to query itself, which deadlocks the process and leaves the rest of the site unable to communicate with it. The sessions manager is an essential part of the site and gameside doesn't work without it. The forums stay up but with no sidebar and no logins.

This bug has been around for years but for some reason has only triggered recently. I have written a fix but it's still in local testing. Should arrive in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, there is a new utility that checks on the sessions manager every so often and restarts it if it seems to be deadlocked.

Admin does get auto-notifications via email when the site goes down, but depending on the time of day there isn't always someone around to deal with it.

New code is in, which should eliminate that bug.

And introduce new ones, of course.

I had some login issues where it repeatedly claimed my password was wrong, and then it just displayed a picture of Reppy running away from an exploding rocket and told me I had three minutes to reach minimum safe distance. No one's reported that particular issue yet, so I thought I'd bring it up. That's probably why activity dropped off.

Does anyone have a screenshot of this lol?

Fun story about that render: It was a quick and dirty thing I tossed together for the boss as a joke back when we last had downtime because of moving servers (hence the burning thing-that's-supposed-to-be-a-giant-server-thing my mod character is fleeing from.) Apparently it now resides more permanently on the NS error page. :P

... I should really build a nicer "NS server" thing and do a nicer looking render for that. :lol2:

Heart bleed is a bug. It's a security bug, really. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed

Not that it's this, but I think that http://xkcd.com/1354/ might be useful, for those that don't get on well with the much drier explanation sometimes given in other places...

(I thought I'd posted this, the other day, but obviously not. Doing it now, because... Well, just because.)

I would like Reppy to graphically demonstrate the sessions manager query itself please.

Thanks for posting that. I can't believe that simple of a bug was left.it would seem the master coders they have employed let that slip

Lot of interesting things have come from this bug.
So, the bug is definitely squashed? (and splintering into lots of tiny new ones?)
