Do you want to keep ByteCoin? I do.

What he said.

It might be fun for the people who find . . . That sort of stuff, fun, but those of us who don't even care are paying the price because of the lag, and randomly getting logged out of NS.

They would improve the server set up though.

That said, if NS transitioned to more servers, I'd possibly support the idea; though I'm not sure about the financial feasibility of it. (Clearly, as I'm not Max or an admin and therefore don't have access to the numbers.)

But as it stands, it's clogging up traffic for everyone, not just a select group (q.v. R/D vs RP, etc.).

Would they?

Who says?

:eyebrow:

I definitely see the appeal, but I just couldn't be bothered to care, and if something that I don't want to be a part of is affecting me, then it's not fair.

They'd need the new servers. This lag is asinine. Money doesn't grow on trees however. Would we see a hike in TG account prices and TG stamp fees? That wouldn't be fair.

Do I personally want to keep Bytecoin? I couldn't care less. I don't find it interesting at all. I hope it doesn't become standard practice where you'd eventually need these things to do "fantasy" transactions between nations. Players who opted out would have poor nations indeed. Then again, NS could earn money by offering Bytecoins for sell... and Miss Swith would say "Farewell NS" and never return.

The fox above me is kinda right. I say we don't keep it.

These things are special because they only happen once in a while, and they'd just be boring if we kept them.

And for this event in particular, the lag is preventing me from doing anything else on NS. If we made bytecoin a permanent feature of the site, the lag might continue,. If NS had this kind of lag forever, blehh. I wouldn't be happy.

That costs money.

Money doesn't grow on trees.

Sorry, this isn't a simple cosmetic joke like the Liberal/Conservative themes that were eventually added to the theme selector; this is a short-term gag, and part of the point is that it's only around briefly. It won't be introduced as a regular game feature.

Also, will it be possible at some point to have actually useful threads in the sidebar, without people's threads about them turning into greedy assholes?

IMHO, NationStates should have a "Minigame" section where players can toggle on & off the views for the 3 past NS minigames (Challenge, Zombies, Bytecoin) and play them even after the day of the public event. Each game could reset once a month, and have leaderboards.

There is no reason the games couldn't run all the time, but let people determine whether to show & use them. :)

Edit: Heck Max could make people pay to "subscribe" to the minigames each month and earn extra $ if he wants. ;)

Except as evidenced by the current lag, running one beats the hell out of the server, nevermind all of them, even as optional/paid features. :P

Max should just switch to OVH and save money whilst getting more performance. :p

Yes, but this one is presently engaging many many people, instead of just the people who opted in. Also, huge number crunching! Some of those wealthy people have ridiculous money. If everything was reset regularly, perhaps the speed of things turned down (mining and the market fluctuations) so it could be played more long term inside of by the minute, if would likely use less resources because of less calculating to do.

You've been here for two years. You should know from last years April Fools Day experience and Halloween that activity is very high during April Fools. If it were to be incorporated into the site: I highly doubt it would be an issue anymore.

YES!

Quite a bit of NS'ers have been waiting a long time for something like this, including myself. I would even donate some money to get a new server system to keep it alive.

Now that's not a bad idea. If you can convince the admins to start a fundraiser and than give them enough money to buy new server hardware to support your habit than the rest of us would not mind it staying. Otherwise I have to go with the rest and say kill it at least for now.

I still think it is a much better idea to have a whole new website for this (and maybe expanding it) rather than attaching it to NS.
