I am sad to say that I am certain that something horrific happened on that fateful day of 10 November 2013.

the strange thing, I never encountered any spam on there. Perhaps I was just absurdly lucky in that respect which is why I was so surprised to fire up the domain in my book marks and find it gone. I can only assume as you said something horrific happened in the back end on the database cluster. but then that asks if things were getting to that point, why were no more recent backups made Post-2007. I do wonder from a Technical perspective what the hell went wrong.

Old issue. The owner of this project went belly-up. Admins may pick it up however, but there's no knowing if the bot-written articles will still be part of it.

If I were to manage NSwiki I would drop bot-written articles due to the uncertainty over the region or nation's orientation towards Gameplay or Roleplay. Bot-written articles about nations were of concern to me because my roleplay population is twenty-thousandth of the stated gameplay population: 12 billion would be practically unsustainable for roleplaying a country that's equal to the size of Comoros.

If you were a regular visitor to "recent changes" in the old NSwiki then you would have seen the scale of the problem. Spammers would create sleeper accounts and then create spam pages in their userspace.

Yeah, I'm kinda meh with the bot. I guess it depends on what the bigwigs (and maybe some of the medium wigs) say. None of us have really touched it since it was created.

As far as it stands, the bot only writes region pages and updates NS States, as reported in its contribs. It does not write new nation pages. So if you don't want to have your nation on the wiki, at least as far as right now is concerned, don't write one on NSwiki.

Also, for what it's worth, Jenlom pointed out that if you don't want the bot to keep overwriting your regional page, just remove the <!--####_####_start--> and <!--####_####_end--> tags. It'll then pass over that particular regional page. Think of it as a bot passover.

After taking a look at the wiki and some associated threads, I am going to say what I think of NSWiki, the fate that befell NSwiki, and the aftermath.

Since 2004, NSwiki had been used by hundreds, thousands (EVEN MILLIONS) to document their nations' doings and all that stuff. We had everything there. Everything. And there were no exceptions. Everything was perfect, until it happened.

On the early morning of 9 June 2012, following a war initiated by spambots, a Charlotte Ryberg requested to Goobergunch (Martin P.; I found a surname - that I will not reveal due to privacy concerns - which is an exact match to him, but the identity may be redacted at mod's discretion. Nevertheless, it may be a clue that can help us reach him) that something called a "DNSBL feature" be implemented to NSWiki. The two had been reportedly discussing the problem via IRC chat. When the feature came forward, most users lost the ability to create an account, and they continuously started getting this error: "Your IP address is listed as an open proxy in the DNSBL used by NSwiki. You cannot create an account (IP address)". They tried desperately to reach Goobergunch to discuss the situation, but for some reason Goob was doing nothing. NOTHING! As life went on, the wiki kept getting more spam, and its userbase started fading.

Look at this: After Goobergunch put on the DNSBL sledgehammer, he mysteriously disappeared from the NS eye and was never heard from again.

On 8 to 16 November 2013, NSwiki went down, was taken down, and disappeared without a trace, warning, or prior announcement, taking everything with it and leaving everyone no time to save the wiki. Since then, efforts to bring it back have not brought the wiki to fullness, not even a letter to reach Goobergunch, and NSWiki is not helping! Goobergunch provided two backups, but the new one was corrupted for unknown reasons meaning the data has been lost for good.

We are saddened by the loss of NSwiki's post-2008 data, well not all of it, of course.

I would like to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Goobergunch in defence of NSwiki's lost post-2008 data if I could, but I feel that is a bit too harsh. We'll try to reach him through physical means and simply ask the question: "Why was the data corrupted, and why did you abandon Nationstates? WHY?!"

So, what would you think, Charlotte Ryberg or Minoa? Do you really have any regret for inadvertantly causing this chain reaction that ultimately resulted in the demise of NSwiki?

Or you could accept Goobergunchia moved on from NationStates over two years ago, and leave him alone, rather than wasting his time. NSWiki.net is dead. Harassing its former owner won't change that. Get over it.

This file has been in circulation for just about one year. Many minds have been at it. No one's been able to wring out information from it. From what I was told, it has the databases, but the actual article text is missing. If you really think you'd be able to do better, have at it. But it's been through the gambit of some of the better coders on here and each time it's resulted in the same conclusion: it's junk. I'm inclined to believe them.

Should Goob had updated the database more regularly? Absolutely. Is there anything that can be done about it now? No. There are some left on the archive web site, and some left on archive.nswiki from back in 2009. Check the links at the bottom of this page to check around. If you're lucky, you might be able to find a few popular pages on the archive.org site.

Efforts were made to contact Goob and ask if he had any information as to the whereabouts of other information or what happened. We received a response and summarized it to the NS population, but ultimately there's nothing that can be done. This business of being angry at Goob or Charlotte (who is really not at fault here) is understood, but it's time to move on. If you feel so strongly about NSwiki, I suggest joining us over there and helping us get up more articles.
