Just a heads up folks. This is Afforess.

No I'm not coming back. This was a nation I had that didn't get deleted. There will be no Afforess III. I am currently pending an appeal, but if that does not work out, it's curtains for me and this community. I have other communities that value my time and efforts far more than NS, and I don't know why I keep investing my time in such a toxic place.

So it's the end of the world as we know it. Fortunately, I will keep the lights on. Expect things to keep working. <SNIP>

MOD EDIT: Asking for donations is against site rules.

I'll re-evaluate the situation in 2015. If by then, I don't want to come back, I will give a 3 month notice, and turn everything off. My setup is totally open source, and I am happy to give control to anyone who can prove they can: afford it, and run it intelligibly. Contact me at my email if you think you can. If you don't have a CS degree or job at a tech company, don't bother applying. It's a complicated setup that I would not hand to someone lightly. Sorry.

To everyone else, their are no real privacy concerns to handing over my setup because I never collected personal or identifying information. I will release a full database dump if/when I ever transfer control.

tl;dr Nothing changes until 2015, lights stay on. Grab a towel and don't panic.

Nice. Want to put the email address back though, for contact? Otherwise the second half makes no sense. Because I can't edit it now.

Edit: Until moderators learn how to edit without a sledgehammer, my email is afforess@gmail.com

You'll sooner see Chimps conducting Mozart. Sorry this happened; NS++ made this game far more user-friendly than it ever had been in the past. You're a better person than I for even offering to leave it in someone's capable hands.

Better then me too.

Here's some trivia that many have not considered. NS++ is provided to the user for free. It sets Afforess back roughly $500 a year to provide the hosting required for this service for those that use it. And let us not forget the countless hours to develop and maintain the code that runs it.

In exchange for that public service and expense, Afforess took a stunning amount of public and private abuse. Most of it out right lies about NS++.

When asked about keeping NS++ alive, Afforess said he is annoyed with the Moderators, not his user base of roughly 8000 people. So he is keeping it up and running at least through the end of this year.

That is one class act. A damn sight more classy then many of the moderators here on this forum and in the game. You have to wonder if Max knows what is going on here.

I really hope for our sakes Shadow Afforess decides to come back, without NS++ raiding/puppet management would be a nightmare and I for one appreciate all of the RL work/monetary investment that went into it.

No, threatening to use it on a nation's region, after said nation created a counter-proposal to 'Liberate Haven', is what caused the Mods to DEAT him.

EDIT: That's not to say that I don't appreciate the work he put in. I'm just clarifying facts.

While I think the threat was extreme and not something I would do, Afforess did nothing legally wrong here. You, Scolopendra and The Blaatschapen should probably read the rules again. Raiding is allowed under the rules. Raiding regions is not only allowed in the game[1], it is actively encouraged.[2] There is no rule against cracking the region password. We can take that even farther by pointing out the the WA may vote to lift a password on any region.

If you don't like that idea, perhaps you should sit down with Max and write a prohibition on regional password cracking into the rules rather then making up the rules as you go along. Or perhaps you may want to expand on the word "hack" in the terms and conditions. Not everyone agrees on what constitutes a "hack."

Oh wait, I almost forgot. We are not permitted to "lawyer" the rules. Some anonymous Mod sent me a curtly worded telegram to that effect just a couple months ago. It said a nation can be deleted for doing that. Apparently that is what happens when one shows a discrepancy in the way the rules are applied. So, forget I wrote any of the above.

With all of the above gone, were are left with "your game, your rules." I would not change that even if it were in my power. You, acting as Mr. Barry's agents, can do as you please. If you don't need the paying customers and/or ad views you can boot anyone you like.

But it should be pointed out that in this case, you not only deleted Afforess, you probably deleted NS++ as well.

Afforess proves to be far better human then I am under the circumstances. He offered up the code and the data base to anyone with the right credentials to keep it up and running. Finding someone willing to shell out the 40+ bucks a month for server space, put in all the time it takes to keep it running, handle support and put up with all the grief that goes with it is not going to be easy. I'm not seeing a bright future here.

You are incorrect.

Impersonation of moderators can lead to immediate deletion.

EDIT: As stated above it is explicitly stated in the FAQ as well
Can I steal another player's nation?

No. This is fraudulent behavior and breaches the site's terms & conditions. The same applies to any attempt to impersonate another player, including attempting to hack nation or region passwords.

This thread is not for discussion of the deletion of Shadow Afforess or a discussion of NS rules regarding hacking regional passwords. The threadjack ends here.

No, what is left of NS++ has been split into two successors, LibreNS++ and NSlash, both projects are updating NS++. LibreNS is a userscript while NSlash will continue as a plugin.

I'm sorry, but that is not true. NationStates++ is not going anywhere for this year, at least.

Please don't lie or manipulate language to try and divert users to your projects. It's in poor taste.

He said that nothing changes until next year. Also, I'll stick with NS++ until one of them is more developed than the one I have, or if NS++ closes for good next year, depending on which comes first.

And I was asking him. Not you.

Besides, you claimed that NS++ will be split and besides, regardless of your intention, it looks like you were trying to divert NS++ users to your projects that aren't as good as NS++.

Besides, this plugin will last until 2015 at the very least. So I am going to keep using NS++ until it either closes or one of those projects is better than NS++ in quality, reliability and features. /discussion

I did. I'm trying to clarify matters here - remember poor communication is what caused all the problems with NS++ in the first place. "Split" implies there was an official top-down decision from me to endorse a successor. NationStates++ has not "split". What has happened is that two competing platforms have emerged. Competition is fine, open source is about competition between ideas. I am happy there is so much interest in NS++ that competition has begun. But don't label either of the competitors as an official split from me. And as far as I am aware, neither are even reusing any of my code. They aren't splits so much as clones.
