How do the population growth mechanics work?

Message = title. I already have a (really) healthy population of 3 billion, and I've seen this slow down a lot. Does population growth slow/speed up/etc over time or is it a linear rate of change?

It grows randomly. I think it is either between 5-8 mil a day, or 4-7 mil. There is nothing you can do to speed it up or slow it down. just luck.

After 21 days of existence, it will grow at 5-7 million per day. For the first 21 days, the growth is fixed: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=116740&p=5887647#p5887647

We should change how population grows. Perhapps, have it based on activity, so those players have are more active will have a greater population growth then less active players.

No, population is the only value that cannot be influenced, and will always stay that way. People use population as a way to determine a nation's age.

I suggest that in the past too :) , but unfortunately, that is what the game base on and if we want to change that, it will require a complete overall of the game.

Growth question...

People say that you grow between 5-7 million people per day, but I've been playing for a few months. I'm still at 4 million. Am I doing something wrong?

You're 389 million. You were never at 4 million - new nations start at 5 million. I have no idea what you're looking at.

I think he meant that he's at a growth rate of 4 million.

He's been around 77 days. 389 - 5 mil starting population / 77 days = 4.987 million per day. Given that the first few weeks don't use the 5-7 / day rule, I think his growth rate is entirely normal.

NewtGingrich is 9 million below the theoretical average population for that nation age. This could be random bad luck, or perhaps NewtGingrich missed an update by moving regions during the major update.

NB: that's -9 after 57 drawings from the possibilities [-1, 0, 1]. Skipping a single update would account for -6 in and of itself.

Is there anyway to stop pop. growth?

Nope. Theoretically, you could surf the work with each update (and avoid updating your nation that's associated with population growth), but that seems to be a bit too complicated and time consuming to be a long-term solution.

That's not a possibility in this game. And even if there were an issue that would allow for it, it still would not affect population growth.
