[[DRAFT]] When the saints go marching out?

Postby Tokuopolis » Tue Jan 19, 2016 2:02 pm

A recent debate on who should be the Patron Saint of @@NATION@@ has been stirred up. Saint Yuri, who has been the Patron Saint of @@NATION@@ for several centuries, was not the original patron saint.

Validity: valid for nations with national religions

Options:
[option] “We should obviously restore Saint Eduardo as @@NATION@@’s patron saint.” Says @@RANDOMNAME@@, history teacher at St Eduardo’s High School. “Unlike Yuri, he was born here, and ruled as king of east @@CAPITAL@@ for about a decade,” “He was our saint for 500 years. We dumped him for some hotshot foreigner with more patronages! Restore Saint Eduardo to his rightful glory! And perhaps alter our national flag and get rid of Yuri’s symbol too!”
[effect] hundreds of children’s books about saint Yuri are being replaced by books about St. Eduardo
[stats] happiness decreases
[option] “No! Yuri’s been our saint for 7 centuries” says @@RANDOMNAME@@, President of the Saint Yuri Society “you can’t get rid of him just because he lived in a foreign country! We’ve got cultural cringe! That’s why we like him! He slayed a giant fire-breathing @@ANIMAL@@...or converted it to @@FAITH@@ depending on what version of the story you read. But he’s praised all over the world! The Maxtopians, the Bigtopians, the Tasmanians, hundreds of places in @@REGION@@! He unifies and connects us! Keep him as our saint!”
[effect] St. Yuri’s day is the most popular holiday in @@NATION@@
[stats]
I like Telegrams. My nation may or may not reflect my real views(it depends what I feel like).

  1. Add "when it was discovered that" to the description.
  2. Don't put the tags in bold.
  3. Add another option; it's too short. Maybe for having them both be saints?

Most Catholic countries have more than one patron saint (Ireland has Patrick, Brigit, and Columbanus; France has Denis and Joan of Arc), and I'm not sure about Protestant countries but I imagine it's similar. Why would this be a debate when they could just have the two?

1) Why not have a third option where both are equally venerated, or rejected, or even a left-field thing like a rota introduced? Or maybe encourage each of the regions to venerate their own patron saint (consequently encouraging secessionist feeling) or maybe getting a patron saint for each situation (one for education, one for parliament, one for the loo...). Or encourage diversity of religion.
2) So far there isn't much too make me root for St Yuri, except the international side. Maybe make that much more central, arguing how he was alive while the nation was part of some empire, so technically he was born in the same country.
3) For the first option's effect line, maybe have something like "millions are now demanding that the St Yuri symbol should be removed from @@NAME@@'s flag."

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

So... is there any distinction between these saints at all beyond "foreign vs not foreign"?

That's really boring.

Most protestants don't have saints. It's a rather important distinction.

Perhaps an option to do away with a national saint altogether?

  1. Okie dokie.
  2. oh don't worry. They're just here on this forum version to make them stand out.
  3. I was thinking about adding another option, but I decided to see what people thought of what I'd done so far.

Okay, I'll add that as an option too.

1. I will add more options, I promise.
2. Okay.
3. Ah, yeah, that's a good idea.

Okay, maybe I should add some more personality to Eduardo and Yuri, and say some of the patronages each one has.

IIRC, England is a Protestant nation, and St. George is still widely revered. In fact, that's where the real events this issue is based off come from.

Exactly. And Germany has ten patron saints!

I said most protestants. England is a bad example as Anglicans carry on a lot of Catholic ideas.

I see you ignored Germany, arguably the most Protestant nation in Europe :eyebrow:

That aside, I don't see this working as an issue, personally.
