[ABANDONED] Some Room for Desert?

Postby Unsuspecting User » Fri Jun 05, 2015 3:09 am

The title might change later.

Title: Some Room for Desert?

Debate: With some room in the government budget, @@NAME@@'s Secretary for the Environment, in league with several other environmentalists, is calling for action against the predicted desertification of former forests and pastures on the outskirts of @@CAPITAL@@.

Validity: Valid for nations with high toxicity, and low to no environmental beauty.

[option]"The situation is urgent," declares @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Secretary for the Environment, loosening the soil of a potted plant in your office. "In a few years or maybe even months, we'll be sporting an unsightly wasteland in the heart of our nation! With some excess funds, we ought to reverse this, and make the scenery green once more. We could restore the habitats of the @@ANIMAL@@, and reuse some land for ecoagriculture. Once that's done, we ought to do the same for similar areas around @@NAME@@."
[effect]The government is battling against the desertification of @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ lands.

[option]"While that sounds nice and all, it's not practical," argues @@RANDOMNAME@@, @@NAME@@'s Secretary of Commerce. "First of all, reversing the effects of desertification take too long, and are unpredictable. Second of all, that excess funding we have is better suited for building new offices and residences on the infertile land, in order to expand our businesses and create new jobs and homes instead. We need to face facts: the land can't be saved, but it can help save more @@CURRENCY@@s by profiting for us. Though there's a good chance that the land will be crumbly and sand-like by the time we build the first skyscrapers, that shouldn't bother anyone."
[effect]New skyscrapers are being built on foundations of sand, in the new @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ desert.

[option]"Are you suggesting we build civilian homes on desert land?!" @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Secretary of Defense asks as he shoves the two other secretaries out of his way. "Everyone knows you can't build on sand! But I have an idea: we could use the future desert to our advantage, and build under it. We can have air-conditioned bunkers, missile silos, and some secret facilities for…secret purposes. When the land becomes a hot, dry, and godforsaken dust bowl, our capital city will have some natural protection, coupled with an undercover defense system!"
[effect]There have been increasing reports of military vehicles disappearing in the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ wastelands.

This is definitely a topic worth making an issue for. And I also like your options.
Carl Sagan, astrophysicist and atheist wrote:"Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.
When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages,
when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling,
that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual...
The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both."

I really like the title - topic is interesting too.

Haven't looked at the options, but it's something I'll be keeping an eye on as it progresses.

Option 2: Srsly, how can you build a skyscraper out of sand? Yes, if you can wetten it, but I'm pretty sure that it would just collapse, plus the foundation would be shaky. It's pretty idealistic, but I like it. Surely shakes it up a lot.

Unfortunately, there is already an issue on desertification. Issue #170: Deserts Devouring @@NAME@@'s Countryside.

Woops.

I knew the topic was good - I'd already seen it somewhere

Darn. Just when I could think of something, with a nice title :D

Anyway, I'm abandoning this issue. Thanks for checking out my issue idea. I'll think of something else and maybe do another draft soon.
