Science vs Ethics

Postby Jehovah and His Witnesses » Fri Jul 20, 2012 3:42 pm

Jehovah and His Witnesses wrote:
Scientists using cloned human embryos for research are on the verge of a medical breakthrough.

"It's really very exciting," says lab head Ella Cho. "Until now, we've kept very quiet, to avoid being targeted by lunatic fringe groups who for some reason think it's wrong to clone human embryos. It's too early to promise anything, but we hope that one day we will have genetic cures for a whole range of debilitating illnesses. I certainly hope the government will support our work."

"Well, if you have to be part of a lunatic fringe group to object to this barbaric practice, I'm a lunatic," says placard-waving protestor Falala Mistletoe. "Of course it would be nice to cure these unnamed diseases, but at what cost? They're messing with the sanctity of human life. It's wrong, and the lab should be shut down immediately."

My nation has always supported bussiness, spirituality, and science (health and education combined to fill about a sixth of the budget). What do I do here? I generally try not to ignore issues, but this one is tough as it provides a benefit to the living, yet it kills embryos. Then again, they are cloned. But is a clone on equal footing as a non-clone? Life begins at conception, but what with clones? Are they alive, or are they dead? Give me feedback…

If your question is about the issue and how to answer it, this is the right place. If you have a general question about science and ethics of cloning, not so much.

Go look in General for an existing thread. You may need to start a new one. While you can reference the NS issue, most of your post needs to be formulating your question and stating your position, then asking for discussion. This forum isn't for general ethics.

It may seem like a general ethics question, but that is because I want to answer the issue based off of my ethics. I wasn't quite sure with this one, though.

But what about humanity? When does a jumble of cells equivalent in number to the amount we lose on a daily basis become an organism with rights?

Well, this one country out of the three I own is meant to at least vaguely be an ecclesiastical representation of my own beliefs. As for the jumble of cells, there are at least a dozen examples in the bible where the embryo is held sacred. Out of both the New and Old Testaments, there is one that I would like to use… but since the bible is in the automobile and that automobile is being used for private investigations, I will quote from my best memory, "…and YOU saw me even as an embryo in my mothers woumb." that I believe is either from Song of Solomon, or Psalms. We follow both bible testaments, with the exception of contradictions between the two, in which case we follow the New Testament.

Now, religion aside, I must say that I am both pro-science and pro-faith, so it causes me great angst when the two forces disagree. I have found in the end, however, that the bible generally holds the correct view on things. For example part of a verse you may want to search on the Internet is "…but as for the Earth, it hangs upon nothing."

Judging from what you're saying, if you're not going to dismiss the issue, then you should pick option #2 as it seems to go more in the line with your beliefs.

Or choose #1 if your nation's spirituality is very strong compared to you science industries and medicine.

If it can take a hit, take the other one.
