Some more successful intervention in terms of modern social and cultural attitudes? *nod* I don't know how possible that is. Amin Maalouf, in his The Crusades Through Arab Eyes , makes the point that those wars all those many years ago froze Islam into a posture of fear and defense regarding the We...

Compromise time.

The police in that area should be sent to help battle ISIL in Iraq. The police get to prove how tough they are at playing soldier with their new gear, and Iraq gets ground support against the Islamic State.

Win-win?

'Iraq and Syria' wouldn't be the right translation.

Al-Sham refers to what in the English language tends to be called the Levant.

Al-Sham means Syria. It refers to a historical region and old country, however, not simply modern Syria. But it is correct to say 'Iraq and Syria.'

Supposedly the Mahdi army is being reformed to meet the threat of ISIS, if one tweet is to be believed.

Its hardly self-defense for Iran when they haven't been attacked. If anything its a preemptive attack. Whatever helps you sleep better. Better to ignore your neighbor being murdered next than call for help or take any action. That response doesn't apply and you know it. If Iran's decision is to int...

Military action is only inevitable if you decide so. When self-defense is the only choice, it can hardly be said to be a decision at all. So what? Some other group will replace them in the future. Do nothing because another group could show up? I'm glad you're not a counselor or something. "No...

What makes you think that military action will solve anything? What makes you think that it will make this crisis better? How is igniting a Sunni-Shi'a war going to solve anything? All of those women, men, and children that are being enslaved, tortured, and slaughtered, how are you going to help th...

Whatever floats your boat. All Iran is going to do is make the situation worse. The terrorists will look at this situation and say, "See! The Shiites are here to destroy us Sunnis. To arms, comrades!" What is Iran going to get out of this excursion? Dead soldiers. What else? Dead Iranian ...

There are also reports of members of Saddam Hussein's old guard joining the ranks of ISIL. After 11 years of the reign of terror the USA ushered in, after a while you'd start abandoning your secular beliefs (funny how the US hated those) and siding with what looks like a rising power. Yet another c...

Now just think if the US had actually destroyed the Syrian military with an air campaign like that fool Obama wanted.

ISIS would be occupying Damascus by this rate, and if Iraq falls they may yet try to crush Syria.

No, because the US sits in the UNSC and has veto power. So does Russia and China. By that logic they will embarrass themselves internationally if they veto the vote. Since when does the US care about its international reputation? They wouldn't have launched an illegal invasion of Iraq if that were ...

Most likely what is going to happen from the way it looks is that the US or a lot of the bigger Western nation don't want to get their armies onto the grounds of Syria. I have said this before and I'll say it again, its going to be Libya all over again and that is a good thing from a bad situation....

Doesn't the US want proof too? I'm sure proof would be nice for them, but that hasn't stopped the US from concluding Assad is definitely at fault. The Obama administration has seemed to already have made up its mind, and just wants corroborating proof. At least some Congresspersons are trying to ge...
